How to Customize your Cupcakes for Halloween
For all Halloween fans out there, this is for you! We’ve already shown you where to collect the must-have items for your Halloween Party (in our spooky Halloween Collection, in case you don’t remember) and also which are the best cocktails for a cosy drink between adults. Now, it is also time to involve your children and have some fun in the kitchen. We were looking for a dessert suitable for young and old, and cupcakes are a foolproof recipe for not having any food leftovers.
First of all, here an easy receipe for 12 chocolate cupcakes. What you need:
1 stick, 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 large egg
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup buttermilk, shaken, at room temperature
1/4 cup sour cream, at room temperature
1/2 plus 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking soda in a large bowl. Cream butter and sugar together in stand mixer until light in color. Add egg and mix until well incorporated. Add 1/2 the flour, the sour cream, the other half of the flour and then the milk. Mix until well incorporated. Add vanilla and mix until batter is smooth.
2. Pour batter into cupcake cups and bake at 350 degrees for 20 – 30 minutes, or until cake passes the tooth pick test.
3. Let cupcakes cool.
Now, let’s add some fancy elements to make it funnier to do cupcakes. Don’t worry, it seems more difficult than it actually is!
Green Frosting for the witches head Decorations (hat, face, hair)
4 oz shortening Snackwell’s Devils Food Cookies
4 oz softened butter Dark chocolate kisses
1 lb powdered sugar Black and red decorator gel
1 teaspoon vanilla Pre-made orange decorator frosting
2 tablespoons milk Chow mien noodles
green food coloring
Add shortening, butter and flour to a large bowl for the frosting. Add milk and beat until light and fluffy. Add food coloring until you get the desired color. Pipe frosting on cupcakes using large round tip. Attach chocolate kiss to cookie using orange decorator frosting. Place on top of green frosting mound. Create witch face with black decorator icing. Add chow mien noodles for hair. Done!
White chocolate covered pretzels
Food writer (or black icing)
Cut the stick to make them shorter. Flatten the marshmallow slightly (for the face) and draw him a funny face with the food writer. Press the stick into the flattened marshmallow. Slide the pretzels inside (and if you can, add some extra frosting, so the pretzels are hold into their place). Stick the arm-less skeleton into the cupcake. Now, to make his arms, carefully cut the top of some pretzels (they break easily so, pay attention). Stuck the arms into the “bones”, here again with some frosting.
Trapped by the spider
Decorating gel (I used Wilton’s Sparkle Gel in black)
First, frost your cupcake (it can be with a simple cream cheese frosting). Take your decorating gel and draw concentric circles on the top of it. With the end of a toothpick, drag by beginning from the center to the edge of the cupcake (and do this about 6 times, as proportionnally equal as possible). Tada! Your spiderweb is created. If you have, add some plastic spiders on the top to make it more “realistic”.
