We always heard, Dress for Success; Dress for the job you want not the one you have. But did you know that clothes play a great power not only over who sees us but mostly on ourselves? This power to influence the clothes on our psychological processes have been studied and recently earned the name “enclothed cognition“.
“Clothes can have profound and systematic psychological and behavioral consequences for their wearers,” the researchers said.
Future research, they suggested, could examine the effects of other types of clothing: might the robe of a priest make us more moral? Would a firefighter’s suit make us more brave? “Although the saying goes that clothes do not make the man,” the researchers concluded, “our results suggest they do hold a strange power over their wearers.”
The experiment applied an intelligence test for two groups of people: the first was asked to use doctor´s lab coats but not the second group. Guess which group got more answers right? Those who wore the lab coats. The second test was on creative processes: the group that wore a hat painter answered more creatively than the group without the hat.
Seem crazy? This short video summarizes the results of the research:
We, women, know it cant be so. After all, we know very well the power of a trip to the hairdresser. And the same happens with clothes. Wear a special piece that exalt our femininity, can exert enormous power over our self esteem, giving a hint to more than boldness and confidence about who we are. Wear a high heel, for example, not only makes us look more powerful: they are able to change our attitude, causing us to behave in a more confident. Make this experience and prove it!
